Austria's Practice

I went to the practice and I took lots of pictures and put them through animoto. So Enjoy

Skills Competition

Last Night a few members of our Journalism 20 class were lucky enough to be a part of a skills competetion with the Latvian Players. Michael, Alex, Victor (Journalism 20 students) and other members of local Midget and Bantam Hockey teams participated. It was a great opportunity to get out on the ice with players at such a high level, and just have a good time. Victor even beat the Latvians in the hardest shot contest with a 142km/h blast. It was a great opportunity for all of us and will be something to remember.

Latvia and Local Skaters Skills Competition

Last night I was lucky enough to skate with the Latvia Junior Team where we did a few skills competitions. The competitions were hardest shot, break away, and also a pylon relay. Also there on the ice it was just a good time to interact with the players and just have some fun out on the ice with some world class players. Best of luck to both teams.

Michael Pool

The Latvian Practice

I covered the Latvian practice and it was fun to watch the team, I even was allowed in the players box to get shots without the glass, hope you enjoy.

Pep Rally Fan Interviews

Unity's Hockey Spirit

Latvia and Austria's Arrival in Unity

Today another journalism student and I went to Prairie Moon hotel upon the arrival of Team Austria and Team Latvia. Austria arrived at 12:00, checked into their rooms, and had lunch at the hotel with time to spare before the pep rally at UCHS, at 2:00. Latvia arrived a little later at 1:15.

Both teams were very friendly and outgoing. The players and coaches seemed very enthusiastic about being in Unity, and Canada itself. Austria was willing to do interviews with us before eating lunch, which are posted on the blog. We had an interview with Marco Brucken, #27 from Austria, and a second interview with head coach Dieter Werfring, and team manager Peter Schramm.

I wish both Austria and Latvia good luck and hope they have a wonderful stay in Unity!

Autograph Signing

When we arrived at the Credit Union Latvia and Austria players were signing autographs and taking many pictures with fans who were crowding around. Many children were very excited to get an autograph and their pictures taken with the two teams. More pictures of the signing and the team players can also be viewed on flickr.

Pep Rally Update

The Austria and Latvia teams received their gift bags from a few business's in town. Then each team chose their favourite dressed fan. Each fan that was chosen gets a free ticket to the game on Wednesday. The teams were very happy with the spirit that was displayed.

Preparations at Prairie Moon Hotel

With the pre-competition exhibition game coming up in Unity, Prairie Moon Hotel is sure to be busy. Austria will be staying December 22nd and 23rd, while Latvia will just be staying the one night on the 22nd. Each team including their coaches, trainers, etc will have 22 rooms booked per night. The hotel has stopped reservations from anyone other than the players, coaches, etc to be able to cater to their needs. Besides stopping online reservations, other special preparations are being made. The teams have requested a special menu, and these meals will be catered from the Armada, Prairie Moons sister hotel, and brought over to Prairie Moon. The hotel seems to be well prepared for the game, and with arrangements being made like more inventory and extra staff helping out, manager Peter Keller who we were lucky to get an interview with stated, “We’ll be able to handle what’s coming at us.”

Even the staff of the Prairie Moon is excited about the upcoming game. The desk clerk, Susan Jones, who we got to interview as well, said that she and the staff are very excited about the coming of the teams, and they anticipate that it will be very busy during that time. They are also, as you would expect, very excited to be able to meet the teams in person, as both Latvia and Austria are staying there. And even though the teams are staying at the hotel, they say it shouldn’t be too much of a challenge to cater to them as they have made plenty of preparations for the teams, including extra staff and people on standby.

Along with a lot of work come benefits. Jones says that business should increase after this event has happened, as having two World Junior teams stay at the hotel should be a major boost in advertising. Keller explains that from the business aspect it will promote the hotel and make people aware that they are open and running a good service. “There’s nothing like free advertising” Keller said. All in all, this should be a great experience for the Prairie Hotel, and also the town of Unity itself.

Austria and Latvia - Background Information

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:

Through the eyes of a ten year old

I have interviewed Dakota Kloster, a grade 5 student from the Unity Public School on the upcoming exhibition game between Austria and Latvia.

First of all I will let you know that he enjoys playing hockey because its fun and a good experience. He started playing when he was 6 years old and plans to continue as far as he can. When asked what his favorite thing about playing hockey was, he said, “I really like the hitting and getting to be on a team”

Dakota’s school is focusing on the Austria team and has done lots to prepare for the game. They started by setting up Christmas trees, like every other year but changed the themes to hockey, which are displayed down the halls of the school. They also have an Austria flag up on their bulletin board, to represent the team. Representing the Austria team, Dakota believes they will win the game.

He is very excited to attend the pep rally, along with the rest of the UPS on Tuesday, December 22nd, and to see all the players of both the Austria and Latvia teams. He says it will be awesome, exciting and lots of fun. His overall thoughts of this event are that it’s something different and is really exciting to have in Unity. It will be an interesting experience for everyone.

Arena Interviews

Arena Interviews:

John Gilbert – Rink Attendant
1. What are some of the preparations being made for the game?
Netting was put up, internet and telephone lines, extra plug-ins for skate sharpeners, etc, seats around glass, 2 cameras – one on each end, everything has to be clean for the game.
2. Are you fixing up the change rooms or anything like that?
Not really, each team is getting two rooms. All we have to do is make room for exercise bikes and food tables.
3. What seating arrangements are being made for the large number of people attending?
Platforms are being put out, with chairs on and around them. Setting up two bleachers at the corners of the arena.
4. Approximately how many people are attending?
We’re hoping for around 1300 people to show up.
5. Where is everyone going to park for the game?
No extra parking, the buses for team personnel will be parked in the back of the rink.
6. For these preparations, are there certain standards that are set by Hockey Canada?
Everything we do has to be passed through Hockey Canada, we have to tell them what our plans are and get them to approve it.

Iris Dresser – Concession Operator
1. What are some of the preparations the booth has made?
We ordered more of everything we already have, getting more workers.
2. Are they hiring more people for game night?
Yes. I’m hoping to have about 8 – 9 people stationed at different places in the booth.
3. The Unity Arena is known for having the “Best Burger in Saskatchewan”, how many are you expecting to sell?
Figuring around 500, if not more.
4. Is there going to be a lot of extra food made?
Instead of cooking all the burgers fresh, some will be pre-made.
5. Are there going to be any special renovations made to the booth?
Sadly, no.
6. Is there going to be a larger variety of food items for the game?
No, we have the same old food that we normally have, just lots more of it.
